Press release on Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s talks with Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi
The foreign ministers exchanged views on the situation in the Middle East and North Africa in light of the explosive potential of internal conflicts and terrorist threats that continue to destabilise regional and international security.
In this context, the ministers focused particularly on the developments around Syria. Sergey Lavrov and Ayman Al Safadi confirmed their principled support for the sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity of the Syrian Republic, and the lack of alternative to a political settlement through an inclusive inter-Syrian dialogue based on UN Security Council Resolution 2254. The ministers spoke in favour of further coordinated efforts to expand and strengthen the ceasefire regime in Syria within the framework of the Astana format in the context of the forthcoming 4th International High-Level Meeting on Syria to be held in the capital of Kazakhstan on May 3–4. At the same time, the ministers underscored the importance of increasing the volume of humanitarian aid to the affected Syrian population, as well as the Syrian refugees in neighbouring countries, including Jordan.
With regard to Iraq, the ministers welcomed the efforts of the government of that country in fighting terrorism and restoring control over the areas captured by ISIS. Moreover, they stated the immutability of achieving intra-Iraqi concord on the basis of a constructive dialogue with the participation of all political forces and ethnic and religious groups. At the same time, they noted the importance of preserving Iraq as a single federal state and ensuring its sovereignty.
In reviewing the state of affairs in the Palestinian-Israeli settlement, the sides confirmed the continued commitment of Russia and Jordan to a two-state solution to the Palestinian problem on a universally recognised international legal basis, and the imperative of an early resumption of the negotiation process leading to this end.
The foreign ministers discussed in detail the most important bilateral Russian-Jordanian issues and agreed on further joint steps to build up mutually beneficial cooperation between the two friendly nations in various areas, including maintaining an active and trusting political dialogue.
